In SA, each day, 20 people are diagnosed with cancer and 8 or 9 people die from cancer. The Cancer Council receives no direct funding from the government and so relies heavily on support from the community and volunteers, to raise the money needed to reduce the impact of cancer in this State.
• In 2004 $2.2 million of donated monies, has been invested in cancer research in SA.
• We conduct education programmes in the prevention and early detection of cancer eg. Mammographic screening and the schools Sun Smart programmes.
• We provide much needed support and information services for those people who are affected by cancer. Such as providing a welcoming environment at Greenhill Lodge (the 55 room motel owned and operated by the Anti-Cancer Foundation), for country people who are in Adelaide undergoing treatment for cancer.
• Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Support Groups.
• The Cancer Council also operates The Cancer Help Line (13 11 20) for confidential information, assistance and support.
The Cancer Council does not use paid collectors and holds a number of high-profile events each year to assist with fundraising, such as Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, Daffodil Day, Country Doorknock and Relay for Life. |
