What is "spina bifida"?
Most people with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus have a disabilty from birth. This affects their physical functioning. It causes loss of sensation in various parts of the body, problems with mobilty and in the majority of cases, incontinence problems involving both bowel and bladder. They also have cognitive memory loss as a result of the hydrocephalus and this hinders them in areas of learning, memory and most importantly, initiating action. This may affect self-care and create a lack of social skills, leading to social isolation
The Association supports people with Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus by- NURSING SERVICES: - accessing medical services and providing nursing services. EQUIPMENT SUPPORT: - eg. wheelchairs and physical aids. SOCIAL INCLUSION: - identifying areas of need and developing programs to promote socialization. RESEARCH: - supporting and responding to research based practices eg. taking Folate before and during pregnancy.
