Autism SA, which was founded by concerned parents of children with autism in 1964, is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation, which provides services to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families. It is partly funded through Government sources, but is heavily reliant upon fundraising to meet the ever-increasing demand and need for services. Client numbers have increased from 580 in 1995, to over 3700 at the present time. We believe that we have more clients than any other disability organisation in South Australia, although the disorder is still relatively unknown to the general public. One in 160 people have an Autism Spectrum Disorder with 50 positive diagnoses by Autism SA every month. There is a year's waiting list for a diagnostic assessment at Autism SA.
What are autism spectrum disorders?
Autism Spectrum Disorder, which includes autism and Asperger syndrome, are developmental disorders, which are characterised by:
· delayed and disordered social skills
· delayed and / or disordered language
· resistance to environmental changes
· repetitive activities and interests (to the exclusion of others)
Approximately, seventy-five percent of people with autism have an intellectual disability.
